What is a muscle contracture?
Sustained muscle tension: when the muscle won't let go
A contracture is the involuntary, sustained contraction of one or more muscle groups. It can appear suddenly (from exertion, a bad movement or a cold draught) or develop gradually from accumulated tension, poor posture or stress. Unlike a cramp, it lasts days or weeks if not treated properly. A chronic contracture can trigger trigger points and lead to myofascial pain syndrome.
Palpable muscle hardness
The contracted muscle can be felt as a hardened band. The area is painful to pressure and may feel warm in acute contractures.
Limited movement
A contracture reduces the range of motion of the nearby joint: turning the neck, bending forward or lifting the arm can become painful and limited.
Referred pain
Contractures with associated trigger points can radiate pain to distant areas: headaches from neck contractures, arm pain from shoulder contractures.
Becoming chronic
Untreated contractures tend to become chronic. The muscle stays hyperactive and the pain sets in, affecting sleep, posture and work performance.
How we treat them
Physiotherapy for muscle contractures in Playa de San Juan
At OneLab we tackle contractures with an effective protocol that combines direct manual and invasive techniques with electrotherapy. The goal is to reduce pain quickly and remove the cause to prevent relapses. We treat neck, lower back, shoulder and limb contractures at our clinic in Playa de San Juan, Alicante.
Manual therapy and massage. Direct pressure, deep kneading and myofascial release to reduce muscle tension and recover range of motion.
Dry needling. When the contracture is deep or resistant to manual treatment, dry needling releases the muscle quickly and effectively.
Tecar therapy. Deep heating of muscle tissue to increase blood flow, improve elasticity and speed up the resolution of the contracture.
Neuromodulation. Electrical currents to relax the muscle and modulate the pain associated with the contracture.
Why OneLab
Muscle contractures: effective treatment without relapses in Playa de San Juan.
Fast relief
With the right combination of manual therapy and dry needling, most contractures improve noticeably from the first or second session.
We treat the cause
We identify the factors that cause the contracture: posture, work overload, stress or muscle imbalances, so it doesn't come back.
No self-medication
Muscle relaxants and painkillers treat the symptom. Physiotherapy treats the muscle directly, with longer-lasting results and no side effects.
